Three months of break — 92 days of rest, travel and adventure. Jūrmala, Kolka, Liepāja and Ventspils — pearls of the Baltic coast. Country homes across Latgale, Kurzeme and Vidzeme offer an authentic taste of Latvian rural life. Children's summer camps — sports, arts, language and themed camps — run all over the country. Summer festivals: Positivus, Liepāja Jūras svētki (Sea Festival), Rīga Adventure Festival, Cēsis Art Festival. Ideal time for Gauja river canoeing, fishing and discovering our ancestors' way of life.

What to do

The autumn break is a perfect five-day pause falling in mid-October, when Latvia's nature peaks in shades of gold. Use the break for family walks in Mežaparks, Sigulda, Gauja National Park, or on the white dunes of Ķemeri. Mushrooms and cranberries are still at their best for picking. Museums in Rīga (Latvian National Museum of Art, Latvian Ethnographic Open-Air Museum) offer special autumn programmes for children. At home, it's time for the first tea and gingerbread sessions.

What to do

The longest break of the school year — two weeks around Christmas and New Year. The Rīga Christmas Market at Doma and Rātslaukums squares draws crowds with mulled wine (glühwein), gingerbread and craft stalls. Ice-skating at Uzvaras Park is a classic tradition. Skiing in Sigulda, Žagarkalns, Cēsis and the Reiņa ski run. If there's snow, Gauja ice-skating and Smiltene offer beautiful winter activities. Many families head to the countryside to visit relatives — Latvia is at its most beautiful under snow and dark starry skies.

What to do

A five-day pause in the middle of March — the moment spring officially begins. A great time for indoor activities: museums (Museum of the Occupation of Latvia, Rīga Motor Museum, AHHAA-like Science Centre in Ķīpsala), pools and spa centres (Līvu Akvaparks in Jūrmala, Jaunķemeri). If the snow has melted, a fine time for the first bike rides along the Whitesand Dune trail. For 9th- and 12th-grade students, the spring break may be shorter due to centralised exams.

What to do

Autumn break in the 2026/2027 school year starts a day earlier than the previous year. Weather conditions are still suitable for mushrooming and cranberry picking if forests have not yet frozen. Train trips to Sigulda and Cēsis to see autumn colours are popular — the Turaida Museum and Castle is a highlight. A note: until 2027, Lāčplēsis Day (11 November) still falls during school time.

What to do

A twelve-day winter break — from 21 December to 1 January. Christmas Eve on 24 December is the most important family evening. Many traditional Christmas and New Year activities — ice-skating, gingerbread baking, burning the tree after the holidays on 6 January (Three Kings' Day). To let first-graders rest longer, note that 4 January 2027 is a Monday — check the school schedule carefully!

The five-day spring break in 2027 begins on 8 March — International Women's Day. For first-graders, schools may grant an extra week (up to 19 March) in the second semester to ease the academic load. A good time for trips along the Kurzeme coast — to Pāvilosta, Liepāja, Ventspils. Pool centres and spas are popular during spring break (Baltic Beach, Jaunķemeri). Cross-country tourism — Rēzekne, Daugavpils, Krāslava.

Latvian school breaks for the 2025/2026 and 2026/2027 academic years

Latvian school holiday dates are set each academic year by a regulation of the Cabinet of Ministers, drafted by the Ministry of Education and Science (IZM). The school year begins on 1 September and ends on 31 May (for grades 1–8 and 10–11), with grade 9 finishing in mid-June after state examinations, and grade 12 finishing in the second half of June after graduation.

The school year contains four breaks: autumn break (one week in October), winter break (about two weeks around Christmas), spring break (one week in March), and summer break (three months, June–August). First-graders may receive an additional week in the second semester. Spring breaks for grades 9 and 12 may be shorter due to state examinations.

Frequently asked questions

Who sets Latvia's school holiday dates?
School holiday dates for each academic year are approved by the Cabinet of Ministers through regulations drafted by the Ministry of Education and Science (IZM). The regulations are published on the official legal portal likumi.lv. The 2025/2026 regulations were approved in May 2025, and the 2026/2027 regulations in December 2025.
Do all Latvian schools have the same breaks?
Most state and municipal schools follow the Cabinet of Ministers regulations. However, some private and international schools (e.g. Rīga First International School, Exupery International School) may choose their own schedules. A few municipalities (especially Rīga) may also approve small variations. For the vast majority of pupils in Latvia, break dates line up.
How long is the summer break in 2026?
The 2025/2026 summer break for grades 1–8 and 10–11 runs from 1 June to 31 August 2026 — 92 days in total. Grade 9 finishes after 12 June (state exams), and grade 12 after 19 June graduation. In 2026/2027, the summer break for grades 1–8 and 10–11 again runs 1 June – 31 August 2027.
How many school breaks are there in a year?
Latvian pupils have four to five breaks during the school year: (1) autumn break in October — 5 weekdays; (2) winter break around Christmas and New Year — about 2 weeks; (3) spring break in March — 5 weekdays; (4) summer break — 3 months; (5) first-graders may receive an additional week in the second semester.
Are breaks for grades 9 and 12 different?
Yes. Grade 9 students finish the school year in mid-June (12 June in 2026), when state exams take place. Grade 12 students finish later — after graduation and centralised exams (19 June in 2026). Spring break for grades 9 and 12 may be shorter to allow for exam preparation.
Where can I find the official school holiday dates?
The official dates are approved by Cabinet of Ministers regulations and published on the legal portal likumi.lv. Official information is also available on the Ministry of Education and Science website at izm.gov.lv. On this page we display the same official dates in a convenient visual format — we recommend adding the breaks to your calendar so you always know when they fall.
